Qualifications

I finally had enough books in my "classroom" when I became a school librarian. That has to be the best job in the school! My teaching career in the classroom and library lasted 37 years.

For 20 years, I have taught adults as well. I present sessions at workshops for teachers, librarians, and writers on the local, state, and national level.

I love nonfiction writing so much that I organized a four day NF 4 NF Conference for new writers of nonfiction. We did that for three years.

Visiting schools and libraries as an author or storyteller is another passion. Currently, I have published nine books for children, 20 for school librarians, and more than 200 magazine articles.

Author Presentations

The "Hole" Story of a Nonfiction Book from Idea to Publication (K-5) There's a lot to writing a nonfiction from finding reliable information, solving mysteries, and locating experts. This interactive session is tailored to each grade level --relevant for every child who writes or likes true stories.

Where Do You Get Your Ideas?  (PK - 2)
Student writers and "professionals" have much in common. This session is a fun, interactive way to learn about how to get ideas and convert them into stories for their own writing.

Storytelling Sessions

Anansi Through the Ages Three Anansi tales are shared as they might have been from over the centuries. The first, A Story, A Story is traditional storytelling and includes African instruments. The second, Anansi and the Moss-Covered Rock, is told with puppets. The third, Anansi's Feast, is presented with technology.

Giggle Tales  Action and laughter will have students eager to retell The Squeaky Door, Sody Salleratus, Little Bunny Foo Foo, and more.

Professional Workshops

Workshops for writers have included Mentor Texts: Never Write Alone Again, Curiosity and Clues: Creating Kid-Friendly Nonfiction" and many others including half-day intensive on writing dynamic nonfiction for children.

I have also presented in-service trainings for teachers and librarians.

Learn more or contact me through the form above. I can tailor a presentation or workshop to your needs.

I thought your visit was great! It was obvious from the very beginning of your presentation that you love children and have a real passion for providing them with a quality experience. --Heather Hess, School Librarian, Hawley, PA

Pat Miller's engaging and inquiry-based presentation kept  students and staff engaged.  This was not your "run of the mill" author visit, where the book is read aloud and the author gives anecdotes on writing. Ms Miller showed the students the value and process of double-checking your sources when researching. --Leila Parrish, Elementary Librarian, The Village School, Houston
