Wendy Hinote Lanier

Wendy Hinote Lanier is a former elementary science teacher, author, and CLASS-certified speaker who writes and speaks on a variety of topics related to children, writing, parenting, and Christian living. She has written more than 45 books, including fiction and nonfiction for children, and articles and devotional pieces for adults. Her books include titles for Focus Readers, State Standards Publishing, ABDO Publishing, Lerner Books, KidHaven Press, Lucent Books, and Capstone Press as well as articles in on-line and print publications such as Highlights for Children and Clubhouse Magazine. 

Wendy’s educational background includes a B.S. in Speech Communications Disorders, an M.S. in Speech Language Pathology, and an M.Ed. in Elementary Education. During her teaching career, Wendy spent more than 18 years teaching in Texas public and private schools specializing in the areas of science, social studies, and language arts.

As a native Texan, Wendy knows a thing or two about telling a good story. Her presentations are fast paced, memorable events chock full of Texas humor. No matter what the topic, you’re sure to get a chuckle or two while you learn something new.

Uses the “Apple” method to show how to construct a paragraph or multi-paragraph report. This method can be applied to all types of standardized test writing.

The Writing Life
Explores the ups and downs of writing as a profession. A look into the steps taken from idea to final manuscript including research, planning, writing, editing, and revision.
Wendy can also develop programs for specific books.

What is Children’s Writing?
A basic discussion of the various types of books classified as children’s writing. Information includes categories of books, ages of audiences, and approximate word counts for each. Basic tools of the trade and resources are also discussed.

Nonfiction for Children
Discussion includes a definition of the various categories of nonfiction writing, use of mentor texts, and how style, structure, and voice apply to nonfiction.

Writing for the Educational Market
Discussion includes a definition of “educational market” followed by the pros and cons of this type of writing. Information regarding basic tools, writing to a specific grade level, strategies for raising or lowering grade level, and using readability tests are also discussed.

Submissions 101: Cover, Query, and Pitch Letters
This session covers the dos and don’ts of submitting work and the differences between cover, query, and pitch letters. Examples of each are examined along with some basics for creating a resume or CV.

Packagers, Publishers, and Work-for-Hire
This session discusses packagers vs. publishers and how to find them. It also discusses the merits of work-for-hire along with information on how to solicit work.
